Commissioned in 1501 by the Guild of The Wool Merchants, this sculpture is considered by many to be the best ever created, with many critics calling it the perfect statue. It’s based on David, the famous figure from the Christian story of David and Goliath, different here in that Michelangelo decided to focus on just David himself, rather than the scene of his victory of his gigantic adversary. The block was made from marble recently verified to have been sourced in the Miseglia district of Carrera, an area that’s provided most of the marble for the world’s famous artworks.
